Varick Street Hotel to utilize solar technology

A 26-story hotel will ascend with its exteriors exercising a versatile and striking solar technology at the corner of Varick and Watt streets. Planned by Charles Fridman, the building will incorporate a flexible, thin-film solar panel glazing which is capable of generating 80 to 100 kilowatta of electricity. Mr. Fridman filed plans for the project last week with the Buildings Department.

The building would be designed keeping in mind a number of unstipulated green designed features raising the bar of the environment quotient a little more. Anthony Morali of MStudio has been hired to design the architecture of the project. The successful completion of the project would yield in saving $40,000 to $50,000 on energy annually.

The eco-friendly building will use a glass called “amorphous thin film glass”. Applied in a gaseous state to the glazing is the photovoltaic technology that facilitates the glass to become much thinner than conventional glass and thereby more malleable. This structure at New York City will be one-of-a-kind that uses solar technology. Details regarding the buildings construction will not be available for a while, as at least six months of hard work will go into getting everything approved.
