As the debates and dangers of global warming heat up, another striking fact crying over the need to curb emissions has come to the fore. Environmentalist in the Pacific state of Tuvalu have issued a stark warning to Britain that the island is on the verge of submergence if uncontrolled emissions continue to rule the roost.

Dr Iftikhar Ayaz, amateur diplomat for Tuvalu in London, is battling to raise awareness of the devastating effect that global warming fused climate change is having on smaller, less developed nations. Crying out for help, he said it is right time to act otherwise his home islands would be submerged under water by 2040.

Tuvalu comprises of nine low-lying coral atolls, less than 4m above sea level. To the horror of the 10,000 inhabitants the islands have been submerging at a rate of about 2.3cm a year.

There were talks of resettling the Tuvalu inhabitants to neighboring Australia and New Zealand, but neither the stringent immigrant laws nor the will of the people made it possible. The people are not willing to leave their ancestral land.

Thereby, it becomes all the more urgent on the part of world community to take effective measures to curb the ever-growing green house emissions in order to save Tuvalu and many similar tiny islands from getting wiped out from the world map.
