TriMet’s retrofit enables Portland buses to save fuel

trimet minihybrid thermal system

Developed primarily for Army tactical vehicles, TriMet’s sensible introduction of a mini-hybrid thermal system makes inroads into Portland’s bus fleet. The highly efficient cooling technology involves eight electrically powered fans to cool off the engines. The technology proposes to save about 700 gallons of fuel a year per bus. It’s proven since dozens of Portland buses armed with the retrofitting technology are already running with less emissions.

Concept involves simple mechanics:

Eight smaller fans, working independently, replace the hydraulic one commonly used in the age-old buses. Without even asking for pounds of hydraulic fluid, these fans turn on when needed. The system has an efficient brushless alternator for more electricity and needs only 10 horsepower to do so. Also, it doesn’t need oil for lubrication and hence, there are no leaks or fires.

If all Portland buses are retrofitted with the mini-hybrid thermal system, savings worth $138,000 a year in diesel could be realized.
