The STAIR Air-Fueled Battery stores 10 times more energy

stair

Technology is progressing at a faster pace. In coming years we will be driving on air- fueled battery. Isn’t this surprising? The new STAIR (St. Andres Air) battery will provide 10 times more energy than the conventional batteries. Surprisingly, in the coming few years’ electric cars, computers, and cell phone batteries will be equipped with the newly designed technology that will live longer without charging.

Research is being conducted at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews with associates at Strathclyde and Newcastle. The four-year research project, “An O2 Electrode for a Rechargeable Lithium Battery” was started on 1 July 2007 and is expected to end on 30 June 2011. It has received funds from EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of Great Britain) of about $2.4 million.

The lithium cobalt oxide electrode will be replaced with a porous carbon electrode in the fuel cell. This will allow the lithium ions and electrons to react in the cell and uses oxygen drawn from the surface of the battery. The new design “STAIR” battery will run on renewable sources like solar, wind and oxygen.

Advantages of STAIR

• Cost effective battery.
• The newly replaced porous carbon is less expensive than lithium cobalt oxide
• Uses oxygen as a reagent and prevents the harmful chemicals to enter inside the battery.

The research team is also planning to make a STAIR cell, which will be fitted in small gadgets like cell phones, MP3 players and will be available in the market before the STAIR air batteries.
