The disappearing Arctic

It’s never too late, they say, or is it? Well, the Arctic is disappearing and it seems no one can do anything about it. In the recent past due to climate changes and global warming the arctic sea ice has been melting away, more and more each year. The loss of sea ice was so extensive last year that most of the Arctic turned into open water and the ice-water boundary was just 700 miles away from the North Pole. This means that the ice present on the Arctic now is a single-year ice formed over the last year’s winter which will not hold against the following summer. Every passing year the records of melting ice on the Arctic are re-established to a new minimum, and this August was supposedly the worst.

Some scientists do not agree that the Arctic is melting, because the ‘La Nina’ which is a sort of temperature fluctuation in surface waters of oceans, brought in a cold phase this year. This led to increase in sea ice in Canada, Baffin Bay and Bering Sea, and it was thought that the summer may not be as bad. Other scientists believe that these melting rates are underrated, though satellites are being used to acquire realistic data, the under-sea processes are not being accounted for, and this would affect any valid conclusion. In fact, the Arctic may disappear completely, five years from now.

Meanwhile, tall talks about how this would affect the global climate and economy are already under way, it might open up trade routes that save money, and it might also increase the amount of fresh water and oil in the world, but it will definitely also increase warmth in the oceans and continue the cycle towards global warming.
