Getting teens off the couch

With the advent of the 21st century, video games, computers and texting equipment have succeeded in taking over the era of physical outdoor games. These have turned the children into couch potatoes, making it almost impossible for the parents to convince their children to involve in physical exercises and other outdoor activities. Inducing the habit of playing games involving physical exercises, help in the over all development of the children during their growing years. It is the duty of the parents to create awareness among their children about working out.

Making fitness fun for teens

1. Exercise fashionably

Teenagers have their own whims and fancies as to how they want to work out with specifications regarding what they want to wear or how they would carry off themselves in style. They may even have issues with getting sticky with sweat, spoiling their hairstyle or smudging of their make-up while exercising. However, try to offset this fashion related complex in them by giving them the freedom to choose their shorts, tanks and other exercise related outfit. Encourage them to opt for supportive shoes for their work-out sessions. This way they can maintain their fashion-conscious image by adhering to the latest trend, even while involving themselves in daily physical activities.

2. Give them some music

Good music compels one to automatically join in the group and shake a leg. Brand new music CD’s or digital download equipment to load on the MP3 player or iPod devices can encourage your teen to get going. Generic dance music or repetitive aerobic tunes generally lead to boredom, thereby making teens drift away from their primary goal of work-out. Hence, give your teens enough room to choose the music of their choice while exercising, so that they long for these work-out sessions instead of running away from them.

3. Pick high-energy activities

Physical activities do not necessarily mean convincing your teen to go for gym sessions or aerobic classes. It can be in any form of high-level-energy-oriented physical activity like skating, boxing, playing football, cricket or any other sports activity of their choice. Taking your child to skate parks, skating rinks or kick-boxing classes can develop a keenness within them to join in the herd. Not only do they add an element of fun and contentment for the teen, but also suffice the need of physical aerobic exercises which are much needed for their physical as well as mental growth and development.

4. Let them exercise with friends

Giving an opportunity to work out and exercise with their close buddies can add an element of interest to those boring physical work-out sessions for your growing teens. They generally get convinced and attracted to join and participate in the same activities in which their friends have enrolled themselves. They might even indulge in healthy competitions with their peer group which only prove to be more advantageous in furthering their exercise progress.

5. Reward Progress

We all get attracted and motivated when rewarded for a positive achievement. Same is the case with our growing teens. Offering them their favorite health drink after a vigorous work-out session, drawing up fitness goals for your teens to achieve and accomplish and thereby rewarding them on successfully completion of the same may act as a boosting factor.
