Some superficially green gadgets from Electrolux Design Lab 2009

designlab09

Calling on the soon-to-be product designers to display their concepts, Electrolux Design Lab 2009 has received numerous entries for coveted prize money of €5,000 and a 6 months paid internship at an Electrolux Design Center. Out of the confirmed entries, certain concepts are seriously misleading since they look as if they are green, but are not actually!

1) Cocoon

• Concept Designer: Rickard Hederstierna

• Design School: Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden

Neither PETA nor the eco-conscious consumers will like it since it promotes meat consumption. The fully automated microwave-like gadget prepares genetically engineered and prepackaged meat and fish dishes. It does it by heating muscle cells via radio frequency identification (RFID) signals. Accordingly, it further suggests a cooking time. Though it claims to provide a solution to the food crises, it still leads consumers to non-vegetarianism.

2) Le Petit Prince

• Concept Designer: Martin Miklica

• Design School: Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic

The robotic greenhouse prepares humans for the life on Mars. Its highly futuristic design is reminiscent of the wise hero of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s children’s book. Carrying a plant inside a glass case, the device keeps on searching for suitable territory where it can find nutrition. Whether the four-legged pod utilize any form of renewable energy to wirelessly communicate with the other pods roaming on the Martian surface or will it be a self-charged one, we don’t have the least cue of it.

3) Naturewash

• Concept Designer: Zhenpeng Li

• Design School: Zhejiang University, China

The futuristic laundry system is a waterless washer that makes use of negative ions to dispel dirt and make your clothes. It’s highly effective in cleansing the nano-coated fabrics. You don’t need to go stripped since it’s fully capable of washing your rags while you wear them. Keep sitting on the lounge chair, as it doubles as one, and the automated washer will take care of washing. Still, why it is termed as Naturewash is definitely beyond me.
