Green world : The Sun can make ice too!

Sun can make ice too

‘Ice maker that runs on solar power’

Here comes another great discovery in the world of solar technology, a Solar Ice Maker, an ice maker system that runs on solar power. The solar rings that produce green ice could bring refrigeration to poor and rural areas. It uses a parabolic trough solar collector, which is compact and at the same time an efficient design to produce ice, without using any moving parts, fuel or electric input. The cost of maintenance of the system is very low as compared to other refrigeration systems; therefore the ice maker could be used to refrigerate medicine or food in the developing world.

There are a number of ways to configure a large, free-standing icemaker — all you need is a refrigeration system, water supply and some way of collecting the ice that forms. The solar ice maker works in two different modes. Firstly, during the day the heat from the sun is used to generate liquid ammonia refrigerant and secondly, during the night the action is reversed, that is, the generator is cooled by thermosyphon and ice is formed as ammonia is reabsorbed to the generator. Best part of the technology is that it avoids additional expenses as it is powered by the sun itself.

Go green is the slogan that pervades around the globe and of course it is the need of the hour. With that goal in mind, every possible step to make the world green will count.
