Scientists claim to solve smog riddle

Sometimes do you wonder that what is robbing your house exteriors, city’s roads & buildings and other such structures of their nature colours and shining? Then you are not the only one who is been eluded by the pollution dirt. As a matter of fact the same has also puzzled even the scientists for years. But now its seems that enigma of air pollution in cities has been solved.

A new research at University of Toronto that examined the dirt that builds up on the surface of many urban surfaces and attributed this grime to vehicle emissions, dust and salt on roads, kitchen smoke, flame retardant and other such pollutants. In a nutshell in cities soup of thousands of chemical compounds cause this miserable grim. The study also tried to pinpoint the cause of dirt in countryside as well and it was found that there dirt is natural.

Atmospheric chemist James Donaldson who led the research team said:

To me, the surprising and exciting aspect of this finding is that there is much that we still do not know about the chemistry that takes place around us and affects our lives daily. Team’s research could help improve air quality models currently being used to forecast bad air days. These are key in developing strategies to help fight pollution.

During the course of study chemists analyzed urban grime for nitrogen oxides, the main pollutant substance. After analyzing it was found that nitrogen oxides are emitted into the atmosphere when fossil fuels burn, and when it mix with other pollutants volatile organic compounds that are present in the air then smog is formed.

These findings are expected to help in chalking strategies to tackle smog and would help to improve bad-air predictions. The details of this study would appear in June 15 issue of Environmental Science & Technology journal.
