How to parent children with ADHD

parent children with ADHD

Children with ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder tend to have immense energy, and that is why their attention is scattered and they are unable to focus.  Parents go through a very unusual behaviour of their child during various phases of parenting, which leads to frustration.  However, parents whose children are diagnosed with ADHD have behaviour that is in the range of high intensity in this aspect.

ADHS is actually a behavioural disorder, which includes various symptoms out of which impulsiveness, distraction and inattentiveness are a few.  Although all children do exhibit such kind of behaviour at one time of the other whilst growing up; however, children with ADHD display them to the extent that simple chores like doing homework or brushing teeth becomes extremely challenging.

In fact, upon diagnosis such children also experience acute trouble in trying to comprehend social norms and do not understand what is appropriate and what is not.  ADHD children exhibit behaviours that can make them to having critical social and academic problems as well.

  • Parents of children who have been diagnosed with ADHD need to provide constant supervision and guidance to their children.  Their frequent reminders to correct inappropriate behaviour would not be enough to improve the child.  This entire process is extremely strenuous and exhaustive.  In certain cases, there might be cases when parents consider the diagnosis to be inappropriate and refuse to accept that their child could have ADHD- as the condition carries a social stigma with it.
  • A parent should approach the condition by personally researching the causes, symptoms, diagnoses and treatment.  The parents should search for support within the neighbourhood as well as find therapists and physicians who are trained.
  • Parents need to be more organised to note down the progress of their child’s condition by formulating routines and chalking out tasks for their child and remain focused.  Parents should also focus on rewarding the child for every good behaviour, rather than resort to punishment for anything negative.
  • Above all, parents having children with ADHD need a lot of patience, as it will be a lengthy ongoing process.  The parents might have to employ a variety of strategies, but should not lose hope if any strategy does not work.

Summary:

When raising children with ADHD, parents should be prepared to handle the frenzied and frustrating behaviour elicited from their child, which might take on various levels of intensity.
