Palau plans to create the world’s first shark sanctuary

Hoping to lead the world in shark conservation, Palau will create the world’s first shark sanctuary. The country will impose a ban on all commercial shark fishing in its 600,000 sq km (230,000 sq miles) of waters during Friday’s session of the UN General Assembly. Moreover, it will also seek to discourage shark-finning, banning it globally.

These creatures are being slaughtered and are perhaps at the brink of extinction unless we take positive action to protect them.

This is how the Palau’s President Toribiong sees at the plight of these helpless creatures. He has been actively raising the issue at the International Whaling Commission and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

With 100 million sharks facing the brunt of human hostility, the move will certainly turn Palau into a safe haven for whales and sharks.
