Architecture firm Olson Kundig recently caught our attention for the eco friendly Rolling Huts in Methow Valley, USA and this time, we have a shape-shifting house from the company’s portfolio. Nestled in the San Juan Islands of Washington, the transforming Shadowboxx house features shutters that fold down to expose floor-to-ceiling glass walls, an office building with huge hand-cranked doors and a retractable glass wall. The inhabitants can raise or lower the bathroom roof to suit their liking and most startlingly, there is even the possibility to re-arrange the interior walls.
The Shadowboxx house enjoys a unique design that intentionally confuses the traditional boundaries between a built structure and its surroundings. Inside the house is a glass-walled bunkroom that comes with six custom rolling platforms that serve both as sofas and as beds and lets the room morph and accommodate diverse functions. The shutters facing the water can be closed for security purposes. Other highlights of the shape-shifting house include rammed earth floors, reclaimed oak floor planks, gypsum board and steel walls, corrugated steel siding and roofing and reclaimed scaffolding ceiling planks.
