Northern white rhinos face extinction

With each passing day the world is facing extinction of many species and the main factors that contribute to it are habitat loss and poaching of these poor species. Same is happening with northern white rhinoceros as Nadi, a sparse northern white rhinoceros succumbed to death on May 30 at the San Diego Zoo dwindling its population 13 worldwide.

Since early 20 century the white rhino is at the brink of extinction due to habitat loss and poaching. It is the second largest land mammal after elephants. Weighing 1800-3000 kg the white rhino has got a hump on its neck’s back that helps to support its huge head. There average life is 40-50 years.

Now, the zoo is left with just two northern white rhinos with Nadi’s death. The zoo officials were unable to give any reason for the loss but it is believed that Nadi had aged and also showed signs of old age.

Being a part of a group maintained at the Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic, Nadi was believed to be more than 40 years old and brought to the zoo from Africa in 1972. Her companion in the zoo was Nola and both had come to the Wild Animal Park in San Diego, in 1989 to breed the species. However both the females were unable to give any calf to the zoo.

Northern white rhinos are critically endangered in contrast to its relative, Southern white rhinos that are most abundant rhinos today. As for now only two white rhinos remain at the Wild Animal Park, six at a zoo in the Czech Republic and five are believed to be wandering in the open areas of Africa.
