New emissions capture technology using ‘aluminium-making process by-product’ launched

aluminium producer alcoa 9Western Australia heads for another baby step towards the cause for the environment. It’s all happening in Kwinana. A Kwinana-based refinery, which is responsible for emission of greenhouse gases, recently got a new technology that will be capturing the emitted carbon dioxide – a key global warming producing gas.

Thanks to the aluminium producer Alcoa for launching this eco-friendly technology to relieve the environment of pollution. The new process is said to be able to prevent 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide the refinery releases into the atmosphere each year!

This amount of carbon dioxide capturing is equivalent to taking more than 17,500 cars off the road! Osborn said,

We use waste carbon dioxide and mix it with our bauxite residue, which does two things, it locks up the carbon dioxide so it provides a significant greenhouse benefit and it also reduces the alkalinity of the residue itself, which provides another environmental benefit.

Managing director Wayne Osborn informs that it is by using a by-product of the aluminium making process, the researchers have found this new way to capture carbon dioxide.

Not just Australia, the company has planned to use the technology world wide. Once successful, this would be a real effective solution against global warming, and also be an effective tool for countries failing to meet emission curbing targets.
