Nevada butterfly’s protection rejected: Is this Bush admin’s attempt to undercut environmental protections?

It apparently seems the recently adopted measures for protecting the habitat of the Sand Mountain blue butterfly is successful in snatching the species from the brink of extinction. During a survey made by the fish and wildlife officials on the butterfly’s count in the wild last year, it is found that their numbers are higher-than-expected.

Thus, the threatened or endangered species will not receive protection under the Endangered Species Act. Bob Williams, field supervisor of the agency’s Nevada office said,

Our finding, after looking at all the available information and the conservation strategy being implemented, is that the threat of the species becoming extinct is no longer there.

But, this decision by the federal administration generated criticisms from conservationists. Sought to have the butterfly listed under the Act, they have accused the decision as the Bush administration’s latest attempt to ‘undercut’ environmental protections.

Challenging the fish and wildlife officials’ finding, they claim that the butterfly numbers have steadily decreased and that its habitat is rapidly vanishing!

It seems the need to confirm on the finding is required in the first place, than taking necessary steps to reject the species’ listing under the Endangered Species Act — officials wake up! — And find out if its politics at environment’s cost.
