‘Facing extinction from rising seas, Maldives to buy homeland abroad’
Global warming and natural disasters are the major issues of concern for the Maldivians, as they are just three feet above the sea level. Need for survival has forced the Maldivians to buy home land abroad. Looking at the current climate trends, it would seem that the Maldivians’ fears are justified. Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed, newly-elected President of the Maldives, will establish a trust fund for the Maldivian people to buy homeland, just in case climate change and an accompanying sea level rise makes the Maldives uninhabitable.
‘Sea covers 99% of the Maldives and inside its blue depths lies the mysteries and riddles related to the formation of the Maldives. The islands are formed around a ring shaped coral reef encircling a lagoon’
Further Nasheed added, “We do not want to leave the Maldives, but we also do not want to be climate refugees living in tents for decades.” Maldives offers a scenic beauty that attracts tourists from around the globe. The tourism industry is the biggest asset of Maldives and therefore the revenue generated from the tourism industry will play a big role in raising funds to buy homelands outside Maldives.A new ray of hope for the Maldivian’s.
