NASA-Glenn to produce Hydrogen the green way

The new way to keep the world green is through hydrogen fuel with zero carbon emission. Hydrogen has become an essential technology needed to address the most challenging problem of the nation, pollution. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
“automobiles create more polluted air than any other source”.

NASA has come up with a solution to this problem by producing fuel in a greener manner. A NASA-backed group is designing a wind- and sun powered fueling system for city buses and other machines that run on hydrogen.

Concept:

The breakthrough the NASA’s Glenn research team is trying for in Cleveland, Ohio is to demonstrate a prototype of commercial scale hydrogen fueling station-making use of high capacity “Electrolyzer”. A device separates water into its elemental components of hydrogen and oxygen.

After deducting the renewable energy off a wind machine or a photovoltaic grid, this energy is further used to electrolyze water. Hydrogen, thus produced, is then used in a fuel cell-powered vehicle. In its initial stage, the installation will produce hydrogen from Lake Erie water to fuel a mass transit bus powered by fuel cells.

Plans:

With funding from the Ohio Aerospace and with a $310,’000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation, the building up of this electrolyzer will prove to be very beneficial for the fueling stations. Initial funding of $110,000 with $200, 00 has already been provided for the progress of this project.

The group is focusing on finishing the system within this year. In addition, they plan to have a prototype hydrogen fuel cell bus, up and running by the end of this year.
