Monitoring volcanic ash can help boost plane safety

plane flying over an active volcano 9

The odds of a plane crash may lead to a hull-loss accident with deaths of many along with huge financial loss. Besides various technical factors involved in such accidents, one of the major present-day prevailing causes is – volcanic ash.

A new study found that some ash laden into the sky by volcanic eruptions may turn up to be deadly especially for jet engines, compared to others. If the changing microscopic textures of volcanic ashes can be monitored, it may be possible to predict the forthcoming behavior of the eruption better.

And, thus flight can be warned of the ash-related dangers and hazards much earlier providing enough room to safely deviate their routes.

According to the study, the textures of ashes can signal a forthcoming eruption. It is when there is more water found mixed with the ash, it indicates that the molten rock underground is about to erupt a volcano.

Thus, encounters between aircraft and ash can be avoided and hence plane crashes and their technical failures.

This study is published in the May issue of the Bulletin of the Geological Society of America.
