Hong Kong should ban energy-wasting light bulbs: Greenpeace

Hong Kong should ban energy-wasting light bulbs

With the world selling in the ‘buzzwords’ of eco-friendliness and energy efficiency, in lines of increasing concerns for greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming, conservationists seems to be up with arms to transform energy-wasting Hong Kong into ‘green’ city.

It’s Hong Kong, because the greenhouse gas emissions here are shooting up with carbon dioxide emissions up 10 percent in 2005 on 1990 levels, as Greenpeace reports.

With an estimated 4.2 million energy-wasting light bulbs, Hong Kong lits up each day, Greenpeace urges the government to force residents use more environmentally friendly ‘fluorescent bulbs.’

But, the question arises — why fluorescent bulbs?

It has been found that fluorescent light bulbs consume only one-fifth of electricity, what the conventional incandescent light bulbs do. To add to, the latter emits more heat than light, with the fluorescent light bulbs lasting 10 times longer.

Though, fluorescent light bulbs are costlier compared to the conventional ones, using it is required to made mandatory to decrease the devastating price we will have to pay otherwise – generated by global warming consequences.

Using the fluorescent light bulbs in Hong Kong, if made mandatory, would help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 480,000 metric tons (528,000 short tons) a year.

Though it may fall a bit heavy on your pocket, this figure is ineludible for an environment you live in.
