Designed with a focus on sustainability and contemporary home décor, the Mayfield Acoustics Model 1 loudspeakers enjoy a hybrid direct and omnidirectional radiating design to meets the needs of discerning audiophiles. The speaker enclosure has been made from thick but lightweight cardboard forms (sonotubes), which come wrapped with thick sheet of sanded and sealed cork. The eco friendly cork wrapping damps much of the rear wave of the included 5.5-inch mid-woofer. The cork spheres on the top of the Mayfield Acoustics Model 1 loudspeakers integrate “ring-radiating” style tweeters with custom-made aluminum mounting rings.
The eye-catching cork spheres are kept intact with struts made from solid steel bars. The outrigger feet are also made with the same flat bar and have been sanded smooth for an elegant chrome-like finish. The crossover for the Model 1 speakers has been done on a printed circuit board and features a 12dB/octave alignment with a Zobel impedance stabilizer. Other salient features include Dayton capacitors, 20-gauge Jantzen air core inductors and Mills and Dayton resistors. The eco friendly, handmade Model 1 cork speakers sell for $899.
