London marching against Global Warming

London has marched forward in procuring green energy. The plan is to install thousands of wind turbines across the capital to meet renewable energy targets. This way it could meet half of its energy by wind power.

It is aimed to generate 665 GWh per annum from renewable sources and this could be easily met by placing one specially-designed wind turbine every 24 hectares. A total of 600 structures could be placed along the length of the Thames, a minimum of 1800 around the M25 and 4170 along 580 km of roads in the capital. By doing this, London will have its first wind farm.

The wind turbines would be Y-shaped structures as high as 40 meters to rise above the city’s rooftops. Each one would generate over 50,000kWh per annum with a direct connection to local grids.

London mayor Ken Livingstone said,

The scheme will make an important contribution towards making London a more sustainable world city. I hope it will encourage other large organizations to consider developing similar schemes on their premises.

As a major world city London has a huge demand for energy and generating energy by wind power are the most appropriate and cost effective forms of renewable energy for the capital. Energy generation through wind power would reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and cut down the green house gases. This will prove to be a positive step towards curbing global warming.
