Lighting plays a vital role to get the best photos and selfies

The art of taking selfies at any given point of time is one of the most popular forms used by many people today. In many ways, selfies help to boost a person’s confidence drastically.  The art of taking pictures of oneself is not a thing of the modern times. The only difference today is that this art got a name or a term that was added from the dictionaries printed on and after 2013.

Selfies goes back to the day the camera was invented

Even if you turn the clock back in time, you will find that before the cameras were invented, people used to get portraits painted of themselves. It was after the invention of the camera, that they learnt the art of taking self-photographs.

While the history of selfies may not hold a lot of importance, the one thing that has not changed at all is the need for good lighting. Even in the olden days, professionals would ensure that there was enough light while taking out a photograph; the same is applicable even today.

Factors that will determine the outcome of your selfie

People take out pictures of themselves for a variety of reasons. Whether you plan to take it out on a serious note or just to have some fun; you will get the best selfie only when there is sufficient light. No doubt, the mobile phones of today are equipped with built in flash, but that can never beat the effect of proper lighting while taking out a photo. While choosing the lighting for your room, here are some factors that you should remember.

Bright and big is always good

The bigger and brighter the light is, the better the selfies are. If you do not want to invest in very bright lights in your room, you can always opt to buy a collapsible reflector. This will help you to get a good collection of selfies. When you are not using it, you can always store it aside. You can also choose to go for a light with a dimmer on it. Play with the brightness of the light depending on the time of the day to get the best results.  You can also consider investing in some good lampshades; one example is the cylindrical shades.

Lights should never be above or below the eyes

Even when professionals work with lights while taking photographs, they always make it a point to ensure that the lighting is at eye level. By placing the light above your eyes there are chances that your photos will look like you have dark circles under the eyes due to the shadow. If you place the light below your eye level, your photo may end up looking like a still from a horror movie. When you place the light on the same level of your eye, it spreads evenly across the face and gives you a nice bright and clear picture.

Always place the light in front of you

If you look at photos taken where a person is facing the source of light and not standing against it, you will see a vast difference between the shots. People who face the light often end up with better pictures than those who stand against it. When we refer to the term standing against it, it means that the light source is not in front of your face but either on the side or at the back. Even the angle that you take determines how well the light falls on your face while taking a picture.

The background should not be left out

Another impact that affects the quality of your photos is the background. Light colors reflect light, so if your background is a light shaded one, you have to be smart while taking your photograph. Similarly, if there is a dark background behind you, then you would need to ensure you balance it by having a decent amount of light to help you get the right look. Some colors may reflect back right on your face like green, red or blue. In such cases, you have to use your lighting options wisely so that the color does not fall into your face while taking out your selfie.
