Leaking windows: Should you go for repairs or replacement?

If you are a person with lots of responsibilities and tight day-to-day schedule, taking care of your home and maintaining it properly might be a hard task for you. However, it does not mean that you will be able to escape all those residential issues which can make your life hell. Leaking windows is one of such problems that you simply can’t ignore.

Repairs or replacements?

Usually, windows have an average life span of 25 years to 30 years. If you take proper measures to avoid potential damage to your windows, you can extend their durability and longevity to a great extent. But how to know whether you should go for repairs or replacement of your year-old casements? Well, it can be the trickiest part of your job and you need to conduct a thorough inspection to find out the original reason of leaks at first.

It is important to check your windows once every 2 years. This way, you will be able to know if there is any damage or other problem like heat-loss, etc. resulting into leaky windows. As soon as you come across the issues, start repairing your casements. But, if the situation has already gone out of your hand, go for replacements.

Factors to consider

Here are a few important factors that you need to consider for making a wise decision and avoiding frustration:

  • Check the Window Glass: Look for minor to major cracks in your window glasses. A simple inspection with the help of a draft-testing tool can make your task easier. Sometimes, you can also find that your casement glass is absolutely undamaged but still leaking. This might be the result of thinning out of the glass. In both cases, replacement is a good option.
  • Check the Window Frame: The wooden frame is the second most significant part of the window that needs to be checked. The robustness of this item depreciates with age and climate. If the frame is damaged, a number of cracks, light-leaks, etc. would be visible in and around it. In such situations, you can either repair the seals of your wooden window frames properly or completely replace those.
  • Check the Functionality: Finally, try to understand whether the functionality of your window is still the same or have declined considerably. If the sliders, bolts, fasteners, etc. can be handled with ease, you do not need to worry about its replacement. But those which have become rigid and rusted should be restored as soon as possible.
