Just recently, ZTE, one of the world’s leading network solution provider, has launched a solar-powered mobile phone dubbed Simu ya Solar in Kenya. ZTE has collaborated with the Kenyan mobile operator Safaricom. The handset has a built-in solar panel to charge the phone and it is made from recycled material. 8-15 hours of solar exposure is sufficient to charge the battery fully.

In the rural areas, where electricity is generally rationed, you normally fall for energy efficient modes of electricity. So, utilizing renewable resources of energy is highly recommended. Hence, Simu ya solar would enable the Kenyans to go self-reliant as far as mobile charging is concerned. The device is aimed primarily for distribution in the rural Kenya for 2999 Kenyan shillings (US$39) only.
