World’s sea levels can double this century!

rising sea levels

Almost all of us witnessed the raw power of seas during Tsunami. That sort of gave us a rough idea of how high the seas might rise. Experts predict that the seas could rise two times more than their current level in near future i.e. as much as by 32 inches. The max. increase could be 64 inches.

An intergovernmental panel of experts have predicted this climate change. The experts looked at the interglacial period which was back some 124000 to 119000 years ago. This particular phase saw a rapid increase in the atmospheric temperature. Also, during this period the climate was much warmer due to a change in earth’s orbital pattern.

Back then, the sea level reached twenty meters above the standard. This research was done by Eelco Rohling, a lead author of the Britain’s National Oceanography Center. Rohling, along with his co-workers, discovered an average 64 inches of sea level rise during the interglacial period. Although the ice sheet models don’t predict a large increase, the sea levels are likely to go up by another two levels in the coming years. Global warming is the likely cause of this sea level change.
