How to brighten up a dark room

brighten up a dark room

Who would like to see your dream room go unused just because it’s dark? The only alternative you’re left with is to burn your pockets for few more skylights, or break down a wall for window. Rather, we can opt for some alternatives to brighten up the room, and create a warm and welcoming environment. Here are few from our diary. Image Credit

1. Stick to light and bright colors

The best colors to go for are light and bright colors. You can also go for different shades of the same color for the ceiling and the walls. This will go a long way to create a warm and bright environment.

2. Furniture
Instead of bulky furniture with dark colors, always go for lighter furniture with lighter shades of colors, which bounce off the light and enliven up the room further.

3. Flooring
Go for light-colored flooring that reflects light around the room. Flooring made from bamboo and light-colored smooth tile or coated concrete will help to brighten up your room.

4. Windows

Windows can provide ample natural light during the day and act as a show piece during the evenings. The important thing to keep in mind is to ensure that windows allow for maximum light and are not bulky thus adding to the touch. Also remove heavy drapes and use a valance that hangs above the windows, allowing as much natural light as possible to enter the room.

5. Lamps

Lamps are a good source for lighting as well as for decoration. If chosen properly they can add to the charm as well as provide ample light. You should choose high powered lighting to keep the shadows away.

6. Mirrors and Glass

If used properly mirrors can make your room look brighter and spacious as well. The larger the mirror the more light it will reflect.

Do’s and Dont’s

• It is best to use landscapes, paintings, art which is soothing and easy on the eyes.

• Plants can be added to make the room healthier and fresh.

• Avoid Clutter as it can make the room look messy, unkempt and gloomy.

• Heavy pieces of furniture, wall hangings, art, window blinds can weigh a room down.

• Avoid lights which are too bright as they can distract and obstruct normal view.
