Henry Miller theatre which has been closed since 2004 will soon open in September. So all you theater lovers, prepare yourself for an amazing experience with “Bye Bye Birdie” being staged with John Stamos, Gina Gershon and Bill Irwin. The joint venture of the Durst Organization and Bank of America has announced recently, Henry Miller’s theatre is on the path to become the first LEED- certified Broadway theater in New York. The design and construction of the theater was undertaken by a project team, including Cook+Fox Architects LLP and Adamson Associates of Toronto. The unique feature about the theater is that it contains 1,055 seats with 95% air filtration, locally- sourced marble, FSC- certified wood products and water urinals, etc.

Henry Miller Theatre: Green Factors

• The design and construction of the theater is made in such a way, that it is equipped with carbon dioxide sensors to maximize fresh air supply.
• The construction of the theater is made from environmentally responsible materials, which include Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood products used extensively in finishes; waterless urinals to reduce consumption of potable water and recycled content wall panels and baseboards.
• 45% of the cement in the foundation and superstructure design was replaced with blast furnace slag. It is a by product of iron manufacturing, which helps in reducing the carbon dioxide being released in the atmosphere.
• 85% of the waste from construction was recycled.

What LEED does?

building impacts why build green 2

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green building rating system is developed by US Green Building Council (USGBC). It provides a set of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. Certification for LEED buildings exist in four levels depending upon the building and how green it is. For example: There are 129 points available for the version of LEED for homes and so the levels are broken down as follows:
• The Certified level (entry level) requires 45-59 points
• The Silver requires 60-74 points
• The Gold requires 75-89 points
• Platinum Level (highest level) requires 90-129 points.

• LEED House or building lowers the operating costs and increases the asset value. LEED building also reduce the waste that is sent to the landfills after construction is complete.
• The building helps to save water and energy by using Energy Star windows, appliances, and light fixtures. It also helps to protect the environment by reducing greenhouse gases, which are emitted into the environment.
• Many cities provide tax waivers to LEED building owners, which is indeed an added advantage.
