Greentopia: Green Burials – Taking the green movement to the grave!

Greentopia Green Burials

In the age where the world is becoming a small green place, a trend that is really catching up fast is that of green burials. The departing souls are seen bidding their final adieu in an earth-friendly manner. There were times when concrete burial vaults and metal caskets were the norms, but the changing scenario has left us with burials that are non-toxic and biodegradable.

The new trend has open avenues for ecologically friendly funerals. One of the aesthetic demonstrations of green burials are Ecoffins by a Colorado company. These naturally biodegradable caskets are made from all organic plant material. An Ecoffin is prepared by using bamboo and banana sheaves that come from the trunk of the plant and peel off naturally without harming the plants. Since nothing else is added during its manufacturing process, the Ecoffin biodegrades naturally within a period of six months to two years along with the body it holds.

Another exemplification of a green crematory practice are the Swaledale coffin and the Wharfedale coffin by UK’s leading coffin manufacturer, JC Atkinson and Son with Hainsworth, Yorkshire-based specialty textile firm. Both of these incorporate the use of cotton for its interiors while jute goes into the making of the edges. A personalized, embroidered woolen nameplate is there for making it a stylish, sustainable cremation. Complementing the eco-friendly coffins are the caskets that keep the ashes within a strong cardboard container.

Making a breakthrough is an eco-friendly coffin made from 90% recycled rigid honeycomb cardboard. These beautifully designed coffins provide strength and stability while being 100% biodegradable.

If you wish to try your hands on coffins made from recycled paper, then the Ecopod would be ideal for you. This unique casket is just perfect for non-toxic burial as it is made from naturally hardened, 100% recycled paper. The use of paper contributes in making it as light as 14 kilos, yet there is no compromise made with steadiness.

There is nothing more painful than departure of your baby. To give them the last soft touch is a baby casket. The interior of this beautiful Cremation casket has a unique fleece lining and pillow placed just above a soft mattress. This casket is crafted from a biodegradable paper, which is handmade using a centuries-old technique.
