Genetically Modified crops could help in sustainable agriculture

Genetically modified (GM) crops are compatible with sustainable agriculture, according to a revolutionary study published in the June 8 issue of the journal Science. The study has been completed after conducting field experiments all over the world.

Scientists at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, The Nature Conservancy, and Santa Clara University had undertaken the study.

With fears of biotechnology and genetic engineering affecting human health and biodiversity, the study reveals how genetically modified plants have effect on other non-modified species. During the analysis spanning over 42 field experiments, scientists establish GM crops cause the plant to produce an insecticide internally, which can well have an environmental advantage because than no need for large-scale insecticide spraying remains. During the experiments it was found that organisms such as ladybird beetles, earthworms, and bees in setting with Bt crops fared better in field trials than those treated with chemical insecticides.

Bt crops stands tall where they are compared with crops using fertilizers and insecticides, but when the question is of crops without insecticides, the answer remains elusive. Study in this regard needs to be further investigated.

Genetically modified crops have a bright future as per this study, but the controversy surrounding GM crops when it comes to human health still stands. A deeper investigation into this matter needs to be undertaken to ensure safety and security of human life and the environment.
