Florida gopher tortoise entombment comes to an end

With all the research aimed at saving tortoises, a Florida tortoise entombment scheme actually kills tortoises rather than conserves them. The pave and pay plan has killed a lot of these magnificent creatures in Florida. Although, the plan is to protect animals, the entombment scheme is actually killing animals instead.

The people of the state have recently raised their voice against this program. As a result, the Entombment will be phased out. The problem: Previously, land developers of the Florida state were allowed to pave gopher tortoise burrows, if they paid their way into the conservation.

This resulted in ‘incidental takes’ (Aka deaths) of a rare species of tortoise found in the area. Thousands of tortoises have already chocked to death. These rare species are found in six of South eastern states, and normally live in sandy areas at a higher elevation.

This scheme undertaken by Florida landowners has already killed 94000 tortoises since 1991. The Florida Fish and wildlife conservation commission(FWCC) came under fire recently, when the conservationists, wildlife biologists and the public spoke up against the entombment. There is a loophole in the FWCC plan, and due to this legal loophole plenty more gopher tortoises will be killed. I think this is a very sorry state of affairs. I hope they better fix the loophole.
