Every little bit helps, says the eco-conscious owner at Deerfield gas station

A gas station owner has recently added some green features to his property, giving some relief to the environment. The Deerfield gas station got energy-saving motion sensors on the light switches and tap faucets in addition to the rain barrel. For his efforts of reducing the gas pump’s carbon footprint, David Welch received a “green” certification this week.

Welch, who operates the Citgo gas station and mini-mart at 1460 Waukegan Road, gave a green transformation to his gas pumps by incorporating features like motion sensors that conserve energy, and a 52-gallon barrel to catch rainwater runoff from the overhead canopy. A thermostat that regulates after-hours temperatures has its own special place. He also replaced light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs, added foliage and evergreens, improved air quality, and as far as the cleaning goes, nontoxic cleaning products do the job.

Unlike other gas station owners who use harmful chemical for cleaning their pumps, Welch, a true environmentalist, cleans the concrete around the gas pumps with plain water. His green initiative do not end here, he also repainted part of the station with environmentally friendly paint and has hooked up the soft-drink machine to an electricity-saving timer. He claims that all these energy-saving approaches have aided in cutting down the electricity and water bills by about 20 percent. Welch is proud of the fact that he is the first gas station owner in the country to receive a green certification from the Green Business League, based in Plainfield.
