EU’s new strategy on CO2: Fines for carmakers

co2 emissions
A European Union source said on Monday that the European Commission is going to make phases by 2012 in the fee it is charging on the carmakers who are not able to meet the targets to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2). The EU will announce on Wednesday how it is going to cut CO2 from big and small carmakers because it is the main culprit in global warming.

Germany has worked on this field by compelling resistance on makers of luxury heavy cars and forcing the carmakers to reduce CO2 emissions to 130gms/km through engine technology by 2012. France and Italy have already switched to small, fuel-efficient cars and have managed to cut the emission percentage.

The details of the strategy of how the cuts will be implemented on big and small cars will be disclosed on Wednesday at the meeting of 27-member Commission. Apart from the engine technology, use of biofuels or other measure can be searched for and implemented to reduce the CO2 emission.
