Encourage your kids to practice self-compassion

Parents try to inculcate good manners and self-esteem in their kids. They believe that kids who know their self-worth and think high of themselves can easily overcome the hardships of their lives and come out as winners.

However, they forget that self-compassion is much more important than self-esteem to motivate their kids. If kids are warm to themselves, they can accept their personal shortcoming and develop a balanced approach in life.

Importance of self-compassion

The threes aspect of self-compassion kindness, common humanity and mindfulness help them move forward in life. Self-compassion helps your kids be warm and kind to themselves, so that they accept the reality and move on with a positive frame of mind.

When they acknowledge the fact that each individual goes through difficulties in life, they find it easier to face their troubles. Self- compassion keeps them from developing a negative attitude towards life. It revives faith in them when life moves in a wrong direction.

It is good to teach your kids to trust their abilities as it takes them a long way in life but at the same time, you cannot deny the limitations of self-esteem. It takes quite a long history of achievements to develop a high self-esteem, which is difficult to maintain. You cannot deny that the constant need to feel better than others can bounce back at times.

On the other hand, embracing yourself as you are is much more helpful. With self-compassion, kids learn the art to treat themselves the way they treat their best friends. Self-esteem exerts some compulsions of achievement on them, which can handicap their ability to keep themselves happy and satisfied.

Inspire them

Parents must practice self-compassion in their own lives so that they can set good examples for their kids. It is hard to motivate kids to practice self-compassion if parents beat themselves up and curse their fate for their difficulties. Parents must treat themselves nice and teach their kids to do the same, as self-compassion helps them lead a happy and successful life.

Do not yell, shout or scold your kids since it conveys a wrong message. Those parents who punish their kids in one way or another communicate that self-criticism is necessary when you make a mistake. Help your kids learn effective social skills so that they can make relationships based on trust. It helps them get rid of harmful behavior patterns too.

High self-esteem can be toxic at times         

 

Mark Leary, a psychologist at Duke University believes that self-compassion provides you all the benefits of self-esteem. Not only this, it helps you keep the side effects of self-esteem miles away from you.

Research says that those people who have high self-esteem can turn into narcissists. To develop a high self-esteem it is necessary to compare yourself with others and to be the best every time you do that, which in itself is hypothetical. Self-compassion enables you to relate to yourself and accept your real self, which is far more important than holding your head high when you make achievements.

As they say it’s human to err, you cannot expect yourself to be perfect. There are times when you need someone who is kind and compassionate. Someone who can hold your hand and tell you that failure is the first step to success.
