Mild earthquake of 4.9 magnitude occurred in the most seismically active zone of northern India at 4.32 a.m. (2302 GMT). The epicenter of the earthquake was in Gomukh near Gangotri, about 250 km north east of Uttaranchal’s capital Dehradun.

The tremors of the earthquake were also felt in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Haridwar, Pithoragarh, Chamoli and some other neighbouring states like Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut and the capital New Delhi.

The tremors created cracks in few houses of Uttarkashi, however there was no other report of damage or casualties.

The quake revived the old memories of October 1991, which had occurred in the Himalayan region. The 1991 earthquake had measured 6.1 on Richter scale, killed 1,600 people and left 2,000 injured.
