Scientists have been warning of the risng sea and their consequences for long. But, the question arise — which are the areas to get submerged by climate change? To find this, scientists are up with their gloves to develop a digital model of the Australia’s coast.
The new model will be assessing the roads and infrastructure needed to be moved inland before they are covered by the rising sea levels, as the first nationwide scheme. The scheme if effective can be used to combat a rise of about one metre by the century’s end, Professor Will Steffen, the head of the ANU’s Fenner School for Environment says.
Professor Steffen said,
I think having a nationally consistent one will be the first of its kind. We definitely need this and this is well known amongst the scientific community and amongst people looking at adaptation. We should definitely have it within the next couple of years.
Global warming will be hitting hard on the low-lying public and private land along the New South Wales coast, according to Professor Steffen. So, to combat the damage he is calling for action on this area.
According to him, it is by the end of this century, some roads and buildings are in danger from rising sea levels. With every passing year, the coastal areas will become more and more vulnerable.
He said,
We should start planning now as infrastructure is renewed to move some of that infrastructure to higher areas.
Some of the roads that go along the coast, any area that’s about one or two metres above sea level would be vulnerable certainly to the rising sea level and also to the to storm surges.
