A more devastating tsunami than that of 2004 is ready to rock Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean any moment, risking tens of millions of lives.
The wounds of the destructive tsunami of December 2004 are still green yet that geologists have warned of a catastrophic tsunami in the Bay of Bengal in the coming future. The tsunami of 2004 devoured thousands of lives in the Indian Ocean from Indonesia, India, Thailand, Maldives and Malaysia and devastated the Sumatran coast. It is warned that the Boxer Day’s tsunami had have its repercussions on any future tsunami in the area. The most vulnerable to face the catastrophe is the Bay of Bengal region, covered under the shadow of Bengal fan, sediment shed coming from Himalayas on its way to Andamans that has so far kept it elusive from the eyes of the geologists.
Observations have revealed that the boundary between the Indo-Austral and plates north of the Andaman Islands are pushing against one another. And once the lateral stress built up is released, the result will be a strong tremor of about 9 magnitude that could easily call for disaster in the form of tsunami for its location in the ocean.
As the tectonic plates inside the earth move, bulge, diverge, smash, slide past each other, resulting in earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes.
Tsunami is the result of a sudden tremor inside the ocean that causes sea waves expand and lengthen their height and the 2004 tsunami triggered by a 8.5 magnitude earthquake was a trembling 30ft high that washed and submerged the coastal areas across the Indian Ocean, carrying away hundreds of people, shattering houses, buildings, crashing boats and vehicles on roads into trees, uprooting them and threatening to end life once and for all.
So much have been studied about the earth, yet earth’s interior remains a mystery for us. Therefore, forecasts and forewarning against the endogenetic forces inside the earth too remain ambiguous.
