How to Decide on HDTV for Your Home

Many homeowners are opting for HDTVs for their home these days. When choosing a HDTV, one would need to consider several factors. If you are intent on buying one of these HDTVs, here are some buying tips that would help you choose the best model and the best specifications for your home.

Consider the Size

Make it a point to measure the size of the available area first. If you plan to place the HDTV inside a home theatre cabinet, measure the enclosure diagonally to make sure you get the right sized TV.

If on the other hand, you plan to mount the HDTV on the wall, note that the larger the TV, the bigger the brackets needed to support and secure it properly. This can turn out to be an expensive affair. So ensure you have the necessary budget to accommodate the brackets as well.

Consider the Viewing Distance

There is an unsaid rule that the larger the size of the television screen, the farther away from it one should sit. Accordingly, make it a point to measure the distance between the HDTV and the couch. The recommended size of the TV would increase as you move further away from it. Optimizing your seating arrangements would thus enable you to enjoy optimal viewing experience. Some of the distance considerations followed by several HDTVs in the market include:

35″ class: 3-5 feet

40″ class: 4-6 feet

50″ class: 5-8 feet and

60″ class: 2.0-2.8 m

Consider the Location

Where do you plan to place the HDTV you buy? Will it serve as the centerpiece for the home entertainment unit you or do you want to place it in another room, such as the bedroom, in the home for personal viewing? In the case of the former, you can be ambitious and opt for HDTVs with 50″ inch screens or above, while in the case of the latter, a smaller sized screen would be more suitable.

Consider LCD, LED and Plasma Viewing Experiences

It is imperative that you understand the difference between LCD, LED and Plasma displays when opting to buy a HDTV for your home. LED TVs make use of LEDs to brighten an existing LCD display. Hence, getting a HDTV with a LED display would be a better option as they would offer better picture quality than traditional LCD displays.

Even in LED displays, you have the option of choosing between back lit and edge lit LED displays. Edge lit LEDs offers lighting from the edges which would sometimes, lead to a washed out picture. Back lit LEDs are thicker and offer a better picture quality although they can turn out to be more expensive.

Consider 3D television

The more recent HDTVs come with 3D viewing capabilities. The good thing is that the faded support for these TVs has led to prices dropping drastically. So if you prefer 3D, now is probably the best time to get one.

Consider the number of ports

Getting a HDTV that has a good number of ports to plug in additional devices would be an added advantage, as it would minimize the need to keep on switching cables for devices every time you want to play them. So choose a TV that has enough HDMI input ports for all the extra devices, including composite, component and VGA ports. While you are at it, you may also want to go for a HDTV that has Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB ports for digital cameras and smart TV services.

Just make sure you compare all these features and more between HDTVs in person. Looking at the specifications and brochures would not give you an idea of how the TVs really work.

Summary

Buying a HDTV for your home would need you to go through a few prerequisites in advance. These pointers would help you choose the best HDTV in lieu with your budget and individual specifications.
