Dealing with panic attacks as new mommie

It is not very uncommon among new mommies to experience panic attacks. A panic attack can be associated with difficulty in breathing, an urge of smothering, racing heartbeat and a tingling sensation around the lips and in the fingers. Most women feel as if they have approached doomsday. In rare instances, people even go to the ER thinking that they have suffered a heart attack and these situations can be really frightening.

1. The first step would be to find out whether you are really suffering from panic attacks. Speak with your care provider and check whether you need medications or cognitive-behavioral therapy. Speak about your concerns and fears regarding motherhood with your partner or a close friend. Serious doubts can actually lead to extreme postpartum depression and anxiety.

2. It is very hard to pinpoint the cause of panic attacks but it is seen that all new moms are highly sensitive to sound. In some women this sensitiveness may cause a panic attack. But it is common in women who have a family history of anxiety. So, it is suggested that every new mom should devote some time to yoga and meditation. This will help them to calm down their nerves.

3. Moms who are suffering postpartum panic can be successfully treated with medicines. She can even enlist in an online postpartum support group. Mothers are always encouraged to get help for postpartum panic attacks for the good of the baby only. Moms do feel guilty during these panic attacks as they tend to believe that the emotional symptoms will ‘somehow leak into the baby’.

4. Recent studies have suggested that a healthy diet goes a long way in preventing panic attacks and anxiety. A good diet helps to keep up the energy levels of the new moms. Since there is a new baby at home, you just cannot afford to fall sick or be a victim of anxiety and panic attacks. The moms need to be given a healthy and nutritious diet. These new changes in your life are essential for the baby as he/she may become vulnerable if you are suffering from postpartum anxiety.
