Most critical potty training problems and their solution

potty training problems and their solution

The never ending task called parenting includes several milestones with potty training being one of them. However, it is equally a challenging task for a child to achieve those milestones well on time in order to keep his/her growth steady and smooth. It requires utmost patience and care to figure out the potty training problems and rectify them well before time for your kid.

Opposing potty training

Problem: Children who are resistant towards potty training do not want to learn it even after the continuous efforts of their parents. Although, they know about using potty, they opt to wet themselves. They oppose when asked to sit on the potty and are reluctant when they are held on the toilet against their wish.

Solution: In such cases, parents need to be equipped with strong-willed temperament and be patient with the kid at the same time. Let your child know that he/she is responsible for using potty. Let him/her take time to start with it. Children above three years are old enough to be trained potty, and if they do it deliberately, it is always better. As parents, you can encourage them to use potty instead of forcing them to do it without their will. In addition, you can start with some rewards or incentives for your kiddo, whenever he/she follows the right way to empty.

Transitory problems

Problem: It is quite a common occurrence when kids have accidents just when they are believed to be completely trained. However, it is only temporary as the child is amidst a changed routine, and accidents are normal.

Solution: As parents, it is does irk a little about the accidents. Be calm with your kid and telling him/her to do it in toilet next time, is the most advisable solution.

Flushing fear

Problem: The noise of water flushing perturbs even a finally potty-trained child. Children fear that they too could get flushed along with the water. The gushing sound causes retaliation in kids to commence potty training.

Solution: The best practice that you could follow is to flush after your kid is done with potty and is out of bathroom. Fear of flushing could be evaded only when you try not to do it deliberately in front of your kid, and just flush casually while talking to your little birdie. Once, your child is sure that there is ‘no big deal’ about flushing, his/her fear would sublimely go away.

Holding bowel movements

Problem: Painful bowel movement is most likely to form a reason that your kid would like to give up his/her potty training and hold bowel movement intentionally. This eventually could result in constipation and further complications in some cases.

Solution: Consulting a doctor could definitely be an appropriate solution. With the help of proper exercises and diet practices, your child can get over the problem of painful bowel movement, resulting in an easy potty training.

Bed-wetting

Problem: Your toddler is about to start his/her preschool and still wets bed? He/she is a deep sleeper and is unable to wake up at the nature’s call.

Solution: This is a common problem in toddlers. There could be several causes for the occurrence of this problem, when it prolongs. There could be the possibility of bladder issues or hormonal issues. Hence, if bed-wetting occurs in your child even after six years of age, it is advisable that you should consult a doctor.

Washing hands

Problem: Children tend to forget basic things about potty training. Things like washing hands after using potty and even flushing form basic potty training activities and can’t afford to go unnoticed.

Solution: During early potty training, kids are quite unfamiliar about the importance of washing hands and right training skills which can help them to achieve this milestone of potty training. You can create a chart for your toddler and ask him/her to maintain it, unless he/she gets accustomed of doing things that are required as a part of potty training schedule.

Dependent on diapers

Problem: Even after being potty trained, toddlers are not confident about pooping in the potty, and they think diapers work best. They find it more feasible as compared to using toilets.

Solution: Comfort matters a lot for kids. They do not have any qualms on wetting or soiling their diapers, if they are not confident about using toilet. In such cases, you can either stop the training for around two weeks and can gradually start it again without pressurizing your kid.

Reluctant to continue

Problem: Toddlers tend to get bored of same schedule every day. They don’t find it that exciting to use toilet all the time and wash hands.

Solution: Talking it out with your little one is always a better option to understand the reason for reluctance towards using toilet. Once started with potty training, there should be no looking back to diapers as your kid needs to come out of it. Hence, the solution resides in you as parents to deal with the need of your kid effectively.

Using toilet

Problem: The standard toilets indeed are intimidating to any toddler. They resist using it more often. Sticking to diapers appears to be the most practical and convenient way to empty themselves.

Solution: You can always start with a potty chair and encourage your child to use it. Since, children learn from parents, you can show your toddler the correct and safe method of using toilet to make them little confident. Stay with them when they use toilet and cheer them when they use it successfully.

Controlling bowel movements

Problem: Toddlers do know how to control their bowel movements. They find it uncomfortable to use the toilet seat.

Solution: In such cases, it is advisable to be lenient with the kid and do not push him/her to use toilet. You can include incentive program for your child like watching his favorite cartoon or reading favorite book. Encouraging your kid is of prime importance under any circumstance and pressurizing them would not be of any help ever.
