Copenhagen plans a green Christmas with pedal-powered tree

This Christmas, the capital city of Denmark will light the festive mood with green initiatives. People will be seen illuminating the traditional Christmas tree by energy generated from pedal power. Standing some 17 meters tall, the energy-efficient lights on the tree in Copenhagen’s City Hall Square will be powered by 15 bicycles that are connected to the square. The power generated by pedaling these 15 bicycles will light up the 700 LED bulbs on the tree.

To kick off this green initiative, a ceremony was conducted on Sunday in which Saint Nicholas climbed a fire truck ladder to the top of the tree and lit fireworks. After this the Christmas tree at the City Hall Square was lit up by little children, the mayor and international VIPs who shed their sweat pedaling the bicycles to harness power. A healthy idea to save the environment, I must say.
