Choosing safe equipment for your baby's room

Decorating the nursery for the arrival of your first baby? Well then, there are certain pointers that you need to take in to consideration for the same. Following these tips when assembling your baby’s room would make it all the more prettier and safer for your new born.

  • Choosing the right sized crib is considered essential for the safety of your baby. Make it a point to choose a crib that is high enough to keep your baby inside, with the individual bars or slats measuring at least 2.5 cm and at the most 5 cm in width. If the cot is short, your baby could easily climb out of it. And if the slats are too wide, he/she can easily get stuck in between them when trying to crawl out.
  • In case you choose a second hand crib, remove the paint and repaint it again using lead free paint. Lead fumes can be dangerous for your kid’s health, and can cause conditions like neurological disorders and learning disabilities. And there are strong chances for your kid to inhale or swallow it while playing in the crib.
  • Choosing the right sized mattress is also considered essential for your baby’s safety. For while a small sized mattress would leave small gaps at the edges that can possibly harm or trap your infant’s legs or hands, a large sized mattress would not fit into the crib and prop up at odd angles at the edges, making it more dangerous for your kid should he/she try to crawl out of the crib.
  • Avoid keeping pillows inside the crib. For your baby needs a firm, flat surface to sleep properly. Furthermore, he/she could smother himself/herself with it, or use it to try getting out the crib.
  • Keep the crib away from windows, lamps, heaters, furniture and wall decorations that your baby can use to get out of the cot.
  • As soon as your kid starts to crawl, you would need to remove all the decorative toys and hangings placed in and around the cot. Your baby may tug at these items when trying to get out of the crib.
  • Make it a point to secure the bookshelves and wardrobes to the walls. This would prevent them from falling over or on your kid when he/she tries to stand up using them. Don’t opt for furniture with low lying drawers as your kid could easily open them or get injured by tripping on an open drawer. And try covering the sharp corners of furniture with a soft padding to prevent injuries to your toddler.
  • Opt for bright colored curtains that come sans any dangling cords as your kid can get strangulated while playing with them. In case the curtains come with cords, tie and keep them high enough so that your kid will not be able to reach them. Avoid hanging decorations that reach the floor for the same purpose as well.
