Our planet seems to have witnessed phenomenal happenings in its ancient times – be it gigantic volcanic eruption, a world devastating earthquake, or even large floods.

One such mega-floods, perhaps the largest-ever that broke apart on Earth is found to have separated Britain from France, which is believed to have been a single piece of land about 400,000 years ago.

The flood with its unimaginable magnitude had unleashed about 35 million cubic feet of water per second; breaking apart a strip of land separating them permanently to form what is now Britain and France, according to researchers.

This unleash of deluge can best be measured by the water, the Mississippi River now discharge, which was 100 times greater than this.

It was a glacial period then, and the natural disaster led to the rising of sea levels, creating what is now the English Channel.

Chris Stringer, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum said,

The timing and method of formation of the Channel have been a long-running argument – after all it really makes Britain what is today, geographically – and the evidence presented in this paper is spectacular.

Since climate change occurred then, as it is now, can this evident be the reflection of the devastating future of the planet? Perhaps yes, but this time humans will be the dominant reason for the ‘awaited natural mega-disaster’.
