Masdar City, an eco-city being built on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, will become world’s first carbon-neutral, zero-waste city that will be entirely powered by renewable energy. The new project called the pilot project will compute and broadcast real time power consumption over a period of two-year. General Electric, the US company will provide both appliances as well as information technology networks for its research venture with Abu Dhabi Government-owned clean energy company, the Masdar.
The pilot project will test how GE’s smart appliances along with its Energy Manager technology can plug into a smart grid to lower power demand in the home and across the city. Ten student residence buildings at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology will be equipped with refrigerators, cooktops and washing machines with embedded wireless communications modules.
The pilot residences will also have a computerized ‘home management system.’ During the project, the network and appliances will receive signals from the electricity grid that will simulate fluctuating power demand, and will respond by automatically adjusting how the appliances operate, so that they save energy during peak demand periods. The commercial line of GE’s smart appliances also known as demand response enabled appliances is expected to be introduced in 2011.
