Bird Island Nest House: A beautiful dome of sustainability

Amalgamating creativity with sustainability is the Bird Island Nest House. Designed by Grant Associates, the structure deriving inspiration from the bird inhabitants of Bird Island wraps the dwelling within a functional and beautiful woven dome, giving it a weaverbird nest-like feel. This energy-efficient dwelling with contemporary architecture is located in Sentul West, Malaysia.

The Nest House sitting in the lap of nature, connected with the lake and enclosing landscape uses many green technologies. The exterior of the house is made from a rough weave of found materials, which incorporates solar thermal panels and a photovoltaic in itself. Tropical plants like epiphytes, ferns, orchids and climbers make the edges look beautiful. A unique yet simple sequence of beautiful boxes and ledges makes the interior living space aesthetically pleasing and artistic.

Setting a stunning external environment are the floating islands, edge planting and aquatic species. A sustainability project of Malaysia’s YTL Corporation in “seeking zero,” the Nest House was among six winning designs for an international competition to create a sustainable dwelling set within an island tropical landscape. Portraying sustainable technologies, the house is seeking completion in 2010.
