Each year we come across a number of stunning concept phones, and 2009 was no exception. Hardly a day passes when we don’t hear of a new concept phone. The recent trend has made it clear that designers and mobile phone makers have now turned their attention to the very familiar buzzword – Green. We are coming across more and more eco-friendly concept phones. Let’s take a look at some of the most remarkable Green Concept Phones spotted this year.


• The Zeri Phone:

The Zeri Phone is powered by a thermoelectric and piezoelectric system. The concept cellphone is equipped with a thermoelectric generator, which produces electricity from the temperature difference produced when the cellphone is being carried in a pocket. To implement this technology, the cellphone features metal wires that are knitted onto fabric. Secondly, for those users who don’t usually carry cellphones in their pocket, the Zeri Phone features a piezoelectric system that is comprised of hair-like generators that produce electricity from the vibration produced by air.

• The Leaf Phone concept:

As the name suggests, this concept phone resembles a natural leaf. To add to its green credentials, the phone uses an organic structure, plus eco-friendly plastic as its main material. Serving a variety of purposes, it is a mini PC that is able to project a laser keyboard onto any surface, allowing you to access the internet anytime. The phone comes with options of running it using solar power or with a conventional battery. It can adapt to the dynamics of the human muscles, hence giving you the option of attaching it to any body part, making a cool personal accessory.

• Samsung Clover concept phone:

Design: Samsung Corp Milano

The Clover phone has been designed to support extra modules comprised for vision, location, sound and sensor, which can be added to the device both by developers and independently. The rear of the handset features a PLCD that changes color according to the amount of juice left in the battery. Apart from the bundled add-ons, the phone has the provision for two additional add-ons, including an LCD and electronic sensors. To add a touch of green to future technology, the phone has been designed to be made from recycled materials.

• TOUCH WOOD:

Design: NTT DOCOMO

NTT DOCOMO has developed a mobile phone prototype from surplus wood of trees culled during thinning operations to maintain healthy forests. The phone was developed in collaboration with Sharp Corporation, Olympus Corporation and “More Trees,” a reforestation project. Dubbed TOUCH WOOD, the phone has been made from surplus cypress wood, and no artificial colors and paints were used to ensure that the wood retains its original natural appearance and aroma.

The solar-powered concept phone comes with Eco-Green Electronic Labels that are designed to power individual components of the phone. The idea is to make the phone run only on its essential systems till the time you’re not actually making a phone call or texting. When the need arises, you can attach Eco-Green Electronic Label, which is actually a solar paper label that can juice up various components.

• The Leaf:

The Leaf is a wearable phone concept that gets powered by solar energy. The flexible phone carries flexible solar modules, which enable the user to wear the device like a wristwatch. The ends of the wristband are secured with magnets. The device won’t allow you to download music or play games, but will make sure that the basic phone functions are made to run on green energy. The main power source of the phone is solar energy, but if the sun isn’t shining, there is a traditional wall charger as well.

Here is concept phone that flaunts its stylish look and eco-friendly aspects. Dubbed the Cheers, the handset is powered by alcohol. To tempt you some more, it comes in the shape of a whiskey bottle and uses alcohol. This transparent concept handset comes with a full touchscreen display and maybe even touch zoom, when taking photos. The cap of the bottle-shaped cell is used as a function switch.

• Sony Ericsson N1 Concept:

Design: Hydro

The Sony Ericsson N1 concept created by Hydro of the Esato board is a green handset that is here to save the planet. N here stands for nature. It is a touchscreen phone made from eco-friendly material and is 100% recyclable. It could add to the list of either a Cyber-Shot or a touchscreen Walkman.

• The Sticker Phone:

During times when we face a signal problem, we often run toward windows for a better signal reception. Thinking on these lines, Liu Hsiang-Ling has come up with an interesting concept phone that can stick to your window glass. It is polysiloxane (silicone) and in order to make it green, the designer has added a solar panel to the back of the phone, and has also given it a slight arch so that it can stick (via suction) to the window glass for some sunshine.

How many of you are accustomed to spinning your key rings? Now spin your mobile to power it. The Mechanical Mobile is human-powered. Now just spin your cellphone on your finger and let it harvest the kinetic energy as you walk down the street. It’s definitely an innovative design, I must say.

• Stix:

Here is an impressive mobile phone that helps users to be in good shape, for they are required to have a stroll, jog or shake to juice up the device. Hailed as the “Stix,” the cellphone makes use of kinetic energy, allowing the users to adhere to an environmentally friendly lifestyle without compromising on the latest technology. Featuring a flexible design, with a touch-sensitive LCD strip and permanent hand number buttons, the Stix safely attaches on a belt clip, purse strap or even your wrist to receive the optimum kinetic exposure for recharge. The cellphone comes with a built-in pedometer and heart rate monitor that lets users keep up with a healthy lifestyle all the time. It wraps around your wrist to check your pulse rate while having a jog to power the phone. In addition, it incorporates GPS technology to navigate your route and calculate the distance and time between the starting point and your destination. Moreover, the Stix integrates voice-dialing capabilities, together with a projector to project numbers on your hand without removing the phone from your ear.

• Nokia 5 Year Phone

Designer James Barber is here with an attractive design that will last for five years. The concept phone is designed in a way to make it extremely rough and tough, and it can be easily recycled. What is interesting to note is that it has 85% recyclable parts, so nothing goes to the landfill.
