An ominous sign ahead as the world struggles with its food supply

a starving child in africa
Starving souls glare with empty eyes as their will slowly wilts under the continuous glare of the sun & more so with the lack of any imminent hope. They wait for a knight in shining armor to come show them the way in to pastures more green, quite literally. They wait for another Robin Hood to emerge from the darkness of the ever stretching shadows to rid their lives of pathos & give it a much needed relief. The few in the world, who are blessed with plenty look at them, act as if they are anxious about their state, make tall claims about providing them the world & beyond & then go back to sleep only to wake up the next day & move on to the latest raging topic. They still wait with dreams in their eyes, waiting for a savior who never came, for a light that never shone, for a world beyond them that promised a Utopia but never delivered.

There are millions like this in the world waiting for their lives to be upgraded, 2 million say the stats and maybe they forgot to count a few more. They do not ask for glamorous clothes, they do not want new gadgets to tantalize their senses, they do not crave need the internet to bestow upon them any great favors; what they need is a morsel of food. If the current trend of the world is anything to go by then very soon the world headed towards a major food crisis. From the heartlands of Mexico to the exotic places in India, drought & food prices inflation seems to be a global phenomenon. Countries across the world are having to deal with it. There is inflation in the prices of all major staple food items across the world. It is 18% in China, 13% in Indonesia and Pakistan, and 10% or more in Latin America, Russia and India, according to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

No single country, it seems, is going to escape it. The factors that are responsible vary from socio-economic to environmental. Global warming leading to unseasonable weather, storms, floods & the effects of the climatic changes & a drastic variation in rainfall patterns are all responsible. This is a direct effect of not keeping our pollution rates & Carbon emissions under control. Then there is the social factor of how more & more of farmers, even in developed nations are turning towards cash crops. The growing demand for bio-diesel is also not helping the cause.

It might get real ugly, real fast…

Jacques Diouf, head of the FAO, said;

If you combine the increase of the oil prices and the increase of food prices then you have the elements of a very serious [social] crisis in the future

Very true indeed! The growth of demand for bio fuel is such that 20% of the production of Maize in US this year is diverted to that industry. While there are empty mouths to be fed, the few rich are more interested in filling their tanks with fuel. While every one might have their own reason, it is very inhuman to take away such a large section of food crop, which inevitably leads to a huge raise in its price. Sure there are solutions. But there are no quick fixes. One can just hope that population control & another Green Revolution across the planet might help the cause in a huge way.

European nations are promising a lot to the continent of Africa. They pledge to connect it better with internet. While the idea is noble, please give them food to eat. It is hard to stare into those innocent & suffering eyes & not get touched. Where is Dr.Norman Borlaug, The great man who really did save millions of souls across the planet? What he did is the true spirit of science. He took science & used it to quite literally feed millions & gave the world hope. I hope he has something special left behind, I hope bio-technology has something special to offer.
