5 Facts to consider before finalizing inter racial adoption

When adoptive parents, adopt a baby of a different race or ethnic group, the process is termed as inter racial adoption. Before adopting a child of another race or ethnic group, it is important to consider the opinion of your family. It is also essential to peep into the future and find answers to the some questions that are bound to be raised. Here are a few facts you should consider before finalizing inter racial adoption.

1. How open are your family members about racism

Racism has been a burning problem since ages. Therefore, before you think of bringing in an interracial baby, think of the consequences. You might be liberal towards such notions, but there might be other members in your family who are conservative about racism. Hence, the baby will always remain outcast in the family and will never get the similar acceptance as that of the others in your family. This might be a problem as it grows up. So, before adopting the baby talk with the people in your home and gather their views. If you feel that they do not have any problem regarding your decision, then only think of such an adoption.

2. Be firm on your decision in your extended family

If you are liberal about racial differences and your family members are also of similar views as that of yours, you can bring in an adopted child for sure. But you must be careful regarding its association with those in your extended family. There might be an uncle or an aunt in your extended family who might be too critical about racism. Such a person might be too nasty in using racial slurs and racial abuses. Keep away your adopted kid from such an association. A negative association may be an obstacle in the healthy mental growth of your kid. Moreover, be firm enough to inform such relatives that you do not like your kid to be criticized on racial grounds.

3. The schooling is vital

Once your kid is big enough to be sent to a school, you must be careful enough to choose the right school for your adopted kid. An interracial kid will never be sent to a school which accommodates students representing similar race. Your kid might face adverse situations in such an environment. He or she might be bullied or brutally abused for being of a different race. This will give rise to a feeling of alienation in the child. Therefore, insist on a school that allows students of diverse races and culture.

4. Try to connect with people of different races

In order to assist your kid to cope up with this racial difference when he or she grows up, you must try to connect with people who have interracial family members or your friends who might be from different races. Take your child along with you as you go to such associations. That way, the kid will feel that he or she has been accepted well enough as that of your other interracial friends. He or she will not feel that there is a thin line of difference somewhere in between you and the kid.

5. Teach your child to appreciate the differences and the similarities

When a baby is of three or four years of age, the physical differences becomes quite evident. This is the stage when one can clearly identify the racial differences and its effects on skin, complexion, hair and the color of the eyes. Thus, before your adopted child reaches this age, teach him or her to identify these differences, not as a criticism but in a positive manner. Similarly, teach the kid to celebrate the similarities he or she has with other people of different races too.
