With the impact of climate change threatening to engulf the entire world, more and more countries have started coming forward to lend their hands in support of the worldwide fight against climate change. Almost all of these countries have started taking measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and switch to more renewable, energy efficient sources and policies. Here are five countries that are striving to make a difference and pave the road for the rest of the world to follow.

Denmark

Denmark leads the world in the fight for climate change and has set very ambitious targets for its green policies. The country plans to derive 100% of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2050. Denmark currently uses wind generated energy to provide electricity to over half of the entire nation. The country’s green plans are made all more possible via social commitment in the form of the Public Service Obligation Tariff, a small amount every Danish citizen pays along with their electricity bill for a greener future.

Germany

Germany announced its energy turnaround movement called Energiwnde recently and has started it with the plan of phasing out nuclear energy by 2022. Under the movement, the government has started announcing plans aimed at investing in alternative renewable energy sources like wind and solar while reducing the use of fossil fuels. The country plans to gain at least 80% of its energy via green methods and policies by 2050.

China

China is often considered the most populous as well as a big contributor to pollution. The country has moved forward in terms of pollution control and has invested a lot of money in green energy over the past few years. Considered to be among the leading solar panel producers in the world, China also boasts of having the highest installed wind energy capacity in the world. While individual cities in the nation have come forward to launch emission trading systems, the government has announced a fund of $1.65 billion for the reduction of fossil fuel in some of the most polluted cities in the country.

Brazil

Considering the fact that Brazil’s economy has been gradually increasing, one would have expected a proportionate increase in the country’s greenhouse gases emissions. However, this is not the case with the nation which in fact, recorded a 5% drop in emissions in 2012, a record low in 20 years. One can attribute this to Brazil’s increased concentration on green energy, with the country already using its waterways to generate hydro power. In addition to this, the nation has set plans to generate up to 10% of its energy needs via wind power, with the initial investment in wind turbines already underway. Brazil’s efforts to reverse deforestation has also helped the country move ahead in reducing its carbon footprint to a great extent.

United States of America

The USA has only recently started wakening up to the potential dangers of life in a future earth stripped off all its natural resources. The country’s long stance of not contributing to the fight against climate change, changed for the better with Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger introducing the US’s first cap on greenhouse gases. His victory paved the way for more leaders to start talking about how the US should do more to reduce emissions and take other appropriate measures to combat global warming.

Other Countries

Most the countries that have joined hands to fight climate change come from the European Union, which has allotted over $243 billion for various climate projects stretching over a seven year period in these countries. Accordingly, the countries that would use this money to strengthen their stance against climate change include Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Iceland, France, Sweden, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.

Summary

Increased global warming has urged a lot of countries from around the world to take measures to start fighting climate change. The countries mentioned above are some of the most influential and inspirational leaders in the fight against global warming.
