Syphilis cases rising in US

New syphilis cases have sharply increased in Los Angeles County by forty percent. The new 1,217 cases had reported in 2005. The tally was 865 in 2001 and increased three times since then. Among the new cases, two-third of the cases were in Gays and bisexual men. The case in women has increased by fifty-six percent than last year.

Surprisingly, this rise in the cases has followed a three-year, $1-million syphilis awareness campaign by the health department. If Syphilis detects early it is easily treatable with antibiotics, but proves lethal if left untreated. Syphilis sores may ease the HIV spread. However, some argues that the gay and bisexual men who infected with syphilis already are HIV positive.
