Healthy food options for 50-year-old and above

As you near 50, you should most probably start being more observant of the foods you eat on a daily basis. While there are a number of foods that need to be struck off your diet chart, there are some foods that you need to include in it. Whole Grains

Loaded with insoluble fiber, whole grains can help reduce loose stools to a great extent by building up bulk. You can substitute foods like rice with whole grains like bulgur. Some of the other healthy members from the whole grain family that you can incorporate into your daily diet include spelt and barley.


Cool Beans

You can also increase your intake of cool beans as you near 50. These so-called complete foods contain high levels of fiber, potassium and protein, which would counteract the effect of sodium, thus making cool beans the perfect choice for those with high blood pressure.



Fishes are rich sources of Omega 3 fatty acids that help boost brain development as well as prevent conditions like Alzheimer. They also help reduce bad cholesterol levels significantly. For best benefits, opt for colorful fishes like salmon.

It is hard to come by natural foods that contain good fat. And avocado happens to be one of those few foods that contain both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. You can use avocado in salads, dips and even guacamole to help your system get a regular dose of these healthy fats.


Unpeeled Fruits

Opt to keep the peel on when you eat fruits like peaches, apples, nectarines, pears, etc. For most of the nutrients (including fiber) these fruits posses would be present only on their skin. Opt to add the peels even to the juices you make. This way, you would ensure your body gets the key nutrients present in the peels.



Although you may be warned to not overdose on coffee, a little amount of it first thing in the morning would not do you harm. Caffeine contains antioxidants that can do many good for your heart. So make sure you do not miss that coffee in the morning every day. Be forewarned though that too much of coffee can actually do you more harm than good.
